पहले यह ट्रॉफी भारत में होनी थी लेकिन तत्कालीन भारत सरकार द्वारा कर कटौती न करने के कारण, ICC ने इसे श्रीलंका में आयोजित करने के बारे में सोचा।  यह चैंपियन की ट्रॉफी का तीसरा संस्करण था।

इस श्रृंखला में कुल 12 देशों ने हिस्सा लिया, जिनमें से 10 देशों ने टेस्ट खेल रहे थे और दो एसोसिएट सदस्य थे।

12 टीमों को चार समूहों में विभाजित किया गया था।  जिसमें प्रत्येक समूह में राउंड रॉबिन मैच आयोजित किए गए थे।  ग्रुप में शीर्ष पर रहने वाली टीम सेमीफाइनल में पहुंची।

मेजबान श्रीलंका, भारत, ऑस्ट्रेलिया और दक्षिण अफ्रीका सेमीफाइनल में जगह बनाने में सफल रहे।

श्रीलंका बनाम ऑस्ट्रेलिया और भारत बनाम दक्षिण अफ्रीका ऐसे सेमीफाइनल में खेले गए।

चैंपियन ट्रॉफी 2002 का पहला सेमीफाइनल भारत बनाम दक्षिण अफ्रीका के बीच में श्रीलंका के कोलंबो में 25 सितंबर 2002 को खेला गया था।

भारत ने टॉस जीता और पहले बल्लेबाजी करने का फैसला किया।  भारत ने सहवाग और राहुल द्रविड़ के अर्धशतकों और युवराज सिंह के 49 रनों के आधार पर दक्षिण अफ्रीका के सामने 262 रन बनाए।

262 रनों का पीछा करने उतरी दक्षिण अफ्रीका की टीम की शुरुआत अच्छी नहीं रही।  ओपनर ग्राहम स्मिथ को युवराज सिंह ने जहीर खान की गेंद पर केवल 4 रन के निजी स्कोर पर कैच कराया, जब टीम का स्कोर सिर्फ 14 रन था।

दक्षिण अफ्रीकी बल्लेबाज जैक कैलिस और हर्शल गिब्स ने अच्छी बल्लेबाजी की और दक्षिण अफ्रीका को मजबूत स्थिति में ले गए।

एक समय ऐसा लग रहा था कि दक्षिण अफ्रीका आसानी से मैच जीत जाएगा क्योंकि उन्होंने 35 ओवर में 187 रन बनाए थे और सिर्फ एक विकेट गंवाया था।

बल्लेबाज हर्षल गिब्स 116 के निजी स्कोर पर खेल रहे थे, जब उन्हें अचानक थकान महसूस होने लगी, इसलिए उन्हें मैदान छोड़ना पड़ा।

The England team was on a tour of Australia and the third Test cricket match of the series was to be played between January 1 and January 5, 1971. But the first 3 days of the match were spoiled due to rain.

Hence the Test match had to be canceled but it was decided that the match be converted into a game of decent overs.

That is why it was made a game of decent overs. Thus, on 5 January 1971, the first ODI in cricket history was played.

The format of the game is that each team will play 40 overs and 1 over will be 8 balls.
